Kokeshi dolls are traditionally lathe cut wooden dolls characterized by their lack of arms and legs with hand painted faces and bodies. They likely originated in rural northeastern Japan in the Bunka-Bunsei eras (1804-29) of the Edo Period. They were originally temple offerings and children’s toys and are now popular with tourists.
