Antique Aquatint Etching After Captain Robert Melville Grindlay
Item Details
An antique aquatint etching with a la poupée coloring, created in 1830, titled View of the Bridge near Baroda in Guzerat, after the drawing by Captain Robert Melville Grindlay (1786 – 1877) in 1806. Captain Grindlay was 17 when he arrived in India in 1803. He served with the Bombay Native Infantry from 1804 to 1820 and during this period made a large collection of sketches and drawings which he later published in two volumes, titled, Scenery, Costumes and Architecture Chiefly On the Western Side of India (London, 1826 – 30). This image is plate 22 from Captain Grindlay’s publication. To the lower left margin, below plate, reads, ‘Etched by T. Willis, & H. Melville.’ To the lower right margin, below plate, reads, ‘Engraved by C. Bentley.’ Title, artist name and date printed in lower center margin. Mounted behind glass in a beveled wood frame with black finish and gilt trim. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.
Condition
- condition consistent with age. Mild foxing and discoloration throughout print. Residue on glass surface. Finish of frame is chipped and worn along edges and on corners.
