Antique T. Sutherland Engraving "The Castle of Furstenburg"

An 1819 hand-tinted aquatint etching by Thomas Sutherland (1785-1820) after a drawing by George Schutz (1758-1823) created for Baron J.J. von Gerning’s book A Picturesque Tour Along the Rhine from Mentz to Cologne, With Illustrations of the Scenes of Remarkable Events, and of Popular Traditions. This image is titled The Castle of Furstenberg, and depicts figures in a floating board in a mountain fjord near Rheindiebach, Germany. The historic Furstenberg Castle looms in the background. The title, artists’ names, and publishing information are printed in the lower margin. The print is matted in black reverse painting with gilt trim, and is presented behind glass in a beveled gilt frame. A wire is attached to the verso for hanging.

Condition

-great for age. Very light foxing just beginning to develop across lower section of paper. Small areas of loss in painted matting. Light surface damage to frame.
