Antique Utagawa Kunisada Woodblock Print of Actors
An original antique 1861 woodblock print by the best-known of the Japanese ukiyo-e printers, Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864), titled Actors Bandô Hikosaburô V and Iwai Kumesaburô III. The image depicts the two actors dressed as a geisha and young man. They sit in a brightly decorated room with multiple inscriptions written throughout the scene. The print was originally the right print of a diptych depicting more actors. The print is matted in white and presented behind glass in a simple gilt frame. A wire is attached to the verso for hanging, along with a sticker with more information about the piece that misidentifies the artist as ukiyo-e printer Utagawa Toyokuni.
