Edward Donovan's Shell Engravings, 1826

A single framed set of two antique copper shell engravings from Edward Donovan’s (1768-1837) Naturalist’s Repository, Volume 4 published in 1826, London, for author, W. Simpkin and R. Marshall. Shell plates are #74 and #170. Donovan’s engravings with fine hand coloring are prized for their beauty, composition and artistry. Donovan’s subjects included birds, butterflies, mammals, shells and many others. He selected his subjects from his own museum and from the collections of scientists, such as Sir Joseph Banks and Drury. Engravings are marked by E. Donovan, and Mefs’rs Simpskin and Marshall, Dec. 1, 1826. Engravings are mounted under glass in a natural wood frame with a light gray mat. Foil label on reverse indicates engravings were framed by Greenwich House Inc. Interiors.
