Handwritten Letter from Pen-Pal Muriel Odden to Shirley Mason

Item Details

A handwritten letter from pen-pal Muriel Odden (married name Coulter, b. 1950) addressed to Shirley Mason, also known by her pseudonym ‘Sybil’. Muriel was the daughter of Shirley’s Mankato State Teachers College classmate Luella, whom became pen-pals for many years, but never met in person. According to Muriel, Shirley viewed Muriel as a daughter since she never had children of her own, and thanked Luella for sharing her. Both mother and daughter remained in contact with Shirley until it all abruptly stopped in 1973, when the book Sybil was published and Shirley Mason disappeared from contact. The letter is on notebook paper with hole punches and written in black ink, dated March 4th, 1963. The letter discusses Muriel’s schooling, 4-H Club, snow sledding, her favorite television shoes such as the Dennis the Mennis, Lassie and I Love Lucy and inquiring whether Shirley liked to draw when she was little. The letter is signed ‘With Love, Muriel Odden’.
