Original Oil On Canvas By Surinamese Artist Wim Bos Verschuur

Item Details

An original oil on canvas by Bernard Hendrik Willem (Wim) Bos Verschuur aka Wim Bos Verschuur, (1904-1985), Surinamese artist, politician, union leader, teacher, and writer. He was born in Paramaribo, and started his art training at an early age. He studied in the Netherlands from 1929 until 1933. Returning home, he became an art teacher, and owned a factory that produced furniture he designed. He became active in social issues, where he was chairman of the Surinamese Workers’ Federation, the Surinamese Workers Central and co-founder of the Union Suriname in 1943. He became involved in Suriname politics and was a member of Parliament, indulging his passions for painting and writing on the side. This work depicts a river flowing through a wooded area in the background, while the foreground shows two sail boats moored side by side, while a fisherman in a small boat waits patiently for a bite, near the opposite shore. There is a nice use of color and saturation in this piece. This painting is artist signed to the lower right corner and is presented in a gilt wood frame. Written in black marker on the back of the canvas: ‘Wim Bos, Dutch artist. Academie Rotterdam, Near Mieuwkoop (South Holland), painted 1967, art gallery: Rembrandt. Rockimbl, Amsterdam’.
