Vintage Handmade White Oak Tobacco Basket
A vintage handmade white oak tobacco basket. The large flat open lattice weave basket was used for handling hands of dried tobacco in the warehouses prior to sale. Producers have switched to mechanical baling machines so tobacco baskets are now a piece of agricultural history. This basket is marked ‘Gary Wright WH LEX. KY. H8-3’ in stenciled paint along the edges of the frame and is bears a burned in stamp ‘GEARY’ on the edge and in the interior of the basket.
Tobacco farmers and warehouse owners stopped using this kind of basket circa 1980.
