Signed First Edition "Ghosts in Irish Houses" by James Reynolds

Item Details

A rare first edition copy of Ghosts in Irish Houses: A Collection of Ghostly Folktales Retold and Painted (New York: Creative Age Press, 1947), with a signed note by the book’s author and illustrator, James Reynolds. Born in Ireland in 1909, James Reynolds was an internationally renowned artist, expert horseman, who wrote a number of books on a diverse range of interests. In Ghosts and Irish Stories Reynolds retells twenty-two terrifying Irish folk tales and illustrates them with beautiful four-color paintings. The dust jacket, which is itself beautifully printed with one states: ‘Here are ghosts and demons that have flourished from the tenth to the twentieth century – the horrible, gluttonous ghost of Jason Bannott, the harpies of ’The Ghostly Catch,’ the madly comic ghosts of the O’Haggerty twins – all the ghosts that midnight fancy shivers to imagine.’ The book contains an effusive introduction by Irish author Padraic Colum. The dust jacket goes on to describe the construction of the book thusly: ‘There are nine full-page, four-color paintings by Mr. Reynolds of Irish houses and castles, and many pencil sketches of their inhabitants, ghostly and human. The jacket design is after one of Mr. Reynolds’ own paintings. Neither expense nor care has been spared to make this a genuinely exciting event in book manufacturing, a book to delight the most discriminating eye.’ The pages are printed on laid paper, except for the above described paintings, which are printed on a smoother white paper. The dust jacket is made of similar laid paper. The book bears a signed note in black pen on its title page.
