Shirley Mason "The Family" Photo Offset Lithograph
Item Details
A photo offset lithograph titled The Family signed to print by Shirley Mason, also known by her famous pseudonym ‘Sybil’. The original mixed media piece was rendered during the latter part of her third year of analytical therapy with Correlia B. Wilbur, M. D. According to biographical information attached to the verso, the original was created during a depressing time for Sybil, a time when she had pressing memories and thoughts of her father. She felt alone and in her depression she painted a sheet of art paper with shades of gray, starring into her gray depression. The figures were executed in pastel chalks, superimposed on to her gray depression. Free-flowing, abstract, rendered in red-orange they represent ‘The Family’. Her mother, red-orange, violent and overwhelming in form, her father to foreground rendered in pale yellows and then herself to the background, smaller and isolated. Sybil identifies her self with her father in this piece, and although she didn’t understand why, after completion she felt better. Unframed. Includes typed letter explaining the details of the watercolor, written by Correlia B. Wilbur, M. D. Certificate of Authenticity included.
