Original 1959 German Political Cartoon

Item Details

An original 1959 German political cartoon drawn in ink and wash, with hand-painted white accents. This remarkable piece of history is titled Höhere Gewalt in pencil at the base. This phrase translates to ‘Force Majeure,’ which is the term given to an unstoppable occurrence that is bound to take place. The image depicts a German soldier leading a dog on a leash. The soldier says to the dog, ‘At foot, Waldi.’ Waldi is a reference to the Daschund created as a mascot for the 1972 Olympics in Munich. Waldi relieves himself on the ground behind the soldier and says ‘Wait, wait.’ The artist signed this piece in the upper left corner, and appears to read ‘H. Chelcie.’ Two lines of indistinguishable German writing are handwritten on the verso, along with the date ‘5.9.59.’ This one-of-a-kind piece of art and history is unframed, and matted on a piece of white chipboard.
