An antique oil on canvas by an anonymous artist of a shepherdess with sheep circa late 19th century. A naive painting, the image depicts a rocky earthen landscape with a bit of green foliage throughout; sheep meander around as a young barefoot shepherdess strikes a pose with herding stick in one hand and a small branch in the other. Presented within a beveled wood frame with a gilt finish and decorative detailing.
Condition
- to fair. Condition is consistent with age. Accretion and craquelure throughout surface of painting. A fabric patch to the verso is affixed to aid repair to a puncture in the canvas near the girl’s armpit on right side. Some creasing around canvas from pressure of stretcher bars. Foxing throughout verso. Finish of frame is distressed.
