A John Rutledge (1739 –1800) signature in brown ink on cream vellum. The signature was cut from a larger sheet and is mounted on a dark cream paper with ink-ruled borders and inscriptions that state ’John Rutledge, of South Carolina. Signer Constitution U.S. & Chief Justice. Born 1739-Died 1800. Member Colonial Congress of 1765 Continental __ 1774 & Gov of So. Carolina. Died 1800’. John Rutledge was the second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. A lawyer and a judge, Rutledge was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress and the Continental Congress, President and then Governor of South Carolina during the American Revolution, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, and an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He was the elder brother of Edward Rutledge, a signatory of the Declaration of Independence.
