Jackie Gleason "The Hustler" Production Still Poster

Item Details

A Jackie Gleason ‘The Hustler’ production still poster. The offset lithograph is a production still poster of Jackie Gleason in his award-winning role in the Academy Award-winning, 1961 black and white film, ‘The Hustler.’ The poster is presented under glass in a simple black metal frame and is ready to hang. Gleason (1916-1987), portrays smooth, cool ‘Minnesota Fats’ to Paul Newman’s arrogant young ‘Fast Eddie.’ The two meet in a pool hall, where Minnesota Fats challenges Fast Eddie to a high-stakes, winner-take-all marathon. Forty hours later, Fast Eddie loses everything to Minnesota Fats’ slick hustle. The film was an easy choice for Gleason; he left high school to hustle pool in the pool halls of Brooklyn as a young man. The film won Gleason a number of awards for his significant supporting role, in which he performed all of his own ‘trick’ pool shots for the camera. The film won two Oscars for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. Gleason was an iconic and prolific comedian, actor and singer, best known for his bombastic, comedic portrayal of blue collar bus driver ‘Ralph Cramden’ in ‘The Honeymooners’ in the early days of television, and a variety show he hosted in the early 1960s. Later he was known to a new generation of filmgoers as ‘Sheriff Buford T. Justice’ in the ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ feature films. He supported many charities, and as an avid golfer hosted a number of charity golf events. Altogether, he performed on stage, in film, recorded songs, and performed in variety and short films on television from 1949 through 1986, a year before his death. He is remembered for his catchphrase, ‘How sweet it is!’
