August Weidenbach Original Landscape Painting of Scottish Castle

Item Details

An original landscape painting depicting the Crichton Castle of Scotland by well-listed early German-American painter Augustus (Karl) Weidenbach (b. 1825). Augustus was born into a family of highly regarded painters and went on to study beside his brother Ernst at the Dresden Art Academy. In the early 1850s, he migrated to North America where he continued his artistic work painting the wilderness, farm and town scenes. This particular work depicts the Scottish landscape with rolling hills and a winding river. The Crichton Castle sits upon the hill in the far distance, where a shepherd tends his flock. Two Scotts men and their canine are painted to the foreground, as well as cattle and a second flock of sheep. The painting is signed in red paint to the lower left corner and is presented in an ornate gilt wood frame. Castle information and booklets are included in this lot.
