Early 20th Century Oil Painting of Odalisque
Item Details
An original early 20th century oil painting on wooden panel depicting a harem scene with a reclining exposed odalisque. She has fair skin and red painted lips. She lays atop a cheetah skin rug while listening to the lute music of a nude servant. This painting was possibly inspired by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s 1763 Turkish Letters. The style of painting quite resembles the work of German master Franz Stuck (February 23, 1863 – August 30, 1928). The subject matter is representative of the tendency to romanticize the other, or the primitive. This painting is signed in the lower right corner, however, surface debris is obscuring legibility. This lovely work of art is presented in a gilt frame, circa 1920.
Condition
- condition is consistent with age. Some paint is flaking from the surface of the panel.
