An original oil on canvas hunting scene by highly regarded 19th century English painter, William Malbon (1805 – 1877), circa 1850. William Malbon’s oeuvre primarily consists of outdoor genre, figure, and animal paintings. His work can be found in the Nottingham City Museum as well as Museum Sheffield. This particular work of art depicts a hunter who kneels beside his canine companions. Their gaze falls to a rabbit that is laid upon the ground. The man’s gun and a hunting trap are rendered against a wooden picket fence at the left side of the composition. Malbon’s signature can be found in paint to the center of the lower margin. Condition
The canvas has lost tension, and has craquelure throughout. Three small holes are found to the left side of the canvas.
