Rare Samuel Carper Signed and Numbered Half Stock Rifle

Item Details

A rare circa 1899 signed and numbered 19 out of 54 half stock rifle by legendary West Virginia gunsmith Samuel Harrington Carper (1848-1927). Samuel’s father, Joseph Carper (1802-1880), established a store and began the lineage of gunsmiths out of Grandview, West Virginia. When Joseph passed, Samuel continued his father’s craft. The Carper name resonates well in the Appalachian region’s history, recognized as one of the founding fathers and for their highly praised firearms. According to legend, these were banned from competitions of their day due to acute accuracy and were feared by the Union. Samuel numbered the rifles, creating fifty-four firearms of various calibers in his lifetime. The Carper’s are recognized for crafting every aspect of their guns, except for the barrel, which were purchased from a Pennsylvanian manufacturer. The rifle is hand constructed of curly maple with a mahogany finish and inlaid base metal detail along the stock. The butt plate and ornately curled trigger guard are made of brass and the barrel, lock plate and flint lock of mixed metals. The ramrod is made of a similar wood and is included with the gun. The barrel is signed by Samuel Carper and numbered 19. A soft case is included.

Included with the rifle is a signed letter from a descendent of the Carper lineage, which states that the rifle has remained within the family since it was crafted by Samuel Carper, ‘It was handed down from my grandfather Early Watson Carper to my father George Samuel Carper and then to me, Kenneth Carper’. Also included is a copy of a newspaper clipping featuring Joseph Carper. Please see photographs for more detail.
