B.B.&B. Antique Steamer Trunk

Item Details

A B.B.&B. antique steamer trunk. This flat top trunk was made by the B.B.&B. trunk company of Pittsburgh, PA. This style of trunk was made in the late 19th or early 20th century. The wood on this steamer trunk is covered in a red canvas, and looks to be shellacked. The canvas covering was a way to reinforce the base wood and protect it from the elements. The trunk has heavy wooden staves, possibly ash, and heavy black iron reinforcements on the edges and corners. Lighter metal vertical staves adorn the top and sides. The staves and iron reinforcements are all attached with heavy iron rivets. The bottom of the trunk’s wood is covered in a light metal. Three heavy hinges support the top in the back, and two heavy clasps keep it shut in the front. A heavy 10 inch by 1.25 inch leather handle is on each end of the trunk and are still functional. The initials S.A.H. are painted on each end. The inside of the trunk is lined with fabric, and there is a certificate of guarantee on the inside of the lid, stating the trunk is guaranteed for five years. The certificate number is 32195. The inside of the trunk has tray rails, but there is no tray.

Condition

The metal on the bottom of the trunk is rusted. The lock clasp on the front is broken off of the lid, and the lock is closed. The lining on the inside has some torn spots and is stained.
