An Indian mughal painting of ‘The Tiger Hunt,’ on silk. The scene is lively and action-packed; the royal court is hunting tigers by horseback and elephant in a field far from the buildings in the background. In brightly colored, traditional costume, royal princes ride horseback and wield spears against the majestic tigers. A tiger attacks furiously, biting a horse while itself being attacked. Attendants rush to the aid of the prince, while one tiger has been killed and is tied to the back of an elephant. Extremely finely detailed in its stylized rendering, the richness and bright colors of the fabric and jewels worn by the hunting party are clearly visible and leaves of grass in the field are delicately rendered. The black and gold border frames the scene with stylized flowers and leaves. The painting is unsigned, and presented under glass with a double mat in a gold-toned, fly-specked frame. Ready to hang.
