First American Edition of "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"

Item Details

A very rare original copy of the 1873 First American Edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne, published by the James R. Osgood Company of Boston. Its cover design is known to the book world as variant A, the blue cover; the title page reading ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.’ Another key point is that ‘The End’ appears on page 303. The book was printed in England and shipped to Osgood in 1872, where he then took out their title page and inserted his own. Unfortunately the great Boston fire of 1872 destroyed most of the copies, thus leaving what is believed to be less than twenty copies. We are proud to be able to present this rare and valuable find to you.

Condition

- it does show the expected wear for age, with one or two pages that have come loose from its binding, specifically pages 79,80 and the illustration facing page 212. Pages 65 ,“Part II” , 146, 150, 194 are starting to “split” from the binding. 79 pages have soiling from fingers on pages. The cover and binding are still in good condition, with the edges of the binding and cover frayed. The pages have yellowed with age and there are some small edge tears here and there, soiling, and minor marginalia, but otherwise in good condition for age and rarity. Please study the many photographs we have provided.
