Ogata Gekkō "Nihon Hana Zue" Japanese Woodblock Print
Item Details
An 1897 woodblock print titled Nihon Hana Zue by Japanese artist Ogata Gekkō (1859-1920). As a self taught artist, Gekkō is recognized as a painter and woodblock designer, inspired by well listed artists’ Hokusai and Kikuchi Yōsai. During the First Sino-Japanese War, Gekkō’s artwork was used to inform the general populace of the war status. The color woodblock print Nihon Hana Zue, depicts several well dressed figures standing outside of an uchi, looking in. Above the house is a sliver of sunset, with characters to the top right and signature to woodblock to the lower left. The print is presented in a faux bamboo wood and glass plated frame, painted black with gold gilt detail.
