A.B. "Happy" Chandler Political Material
Item Details
A collection of vintage political material from the campaigns of A.B. ‘Happy’ Chandler, Harry Lee Westerfield, and Thelma Stovall. Chandler was twice governor of the Commonwealth and Westerfield was twice lieutenant-governor but not twice together. They were elected in 1954 and served as a team from 1955-1959. Thelma Stovall was a three time secretary of state, from 1956-1960, 1964-1968, and then from 1972-1976. The collection includes four cardboard posters, a pot holder, and a man’s tie. The placards are cardboard and feature messages and images promoting the candidates. There are two which read ‘Elect ’Happy’ Chandler Governor’, one which states, ‘Above All Vote Stovall Secretary of State Tried-Proven-Devoted-Honest’, and one which features the Chandler/Westerfield ticket. ‘Linked for Victory ’Happy’ Harry Lee A.B. ‘Happy’ Chandler for Governor’. The quilted cotton potholder dates from Chandler’s 1963 campaign and states ‘If you want these tax free…vote for A.B.C. and Harry Lee in 1963’. The black acetate man’s necktie is printed in yellow, ‘ABC in ’63’. Both the necktie and potholder look to be unused and the tie comes in a Graves, Cox box.
Condition
