Two Antique Wooden Walking Sticks/Canes from 1860-1870's
Item Details
Two waling sticks or canes are from the 1860’s-1870’s. One of these walking sticks (the straight one) belonged to Ellen Harper, mother of Civil War infantryman, William Henry Harper who was the owner and user of the ‘twisted’ walking stick. The ‘straight’ one has a rubber tip added to the bottom in the early 20th Century for use by another family member. There is a small star design carved in the top of the handle of the twisted cane. These are very nice examples of functional woodworking of the 19th century.
Condition
There are many “nicks” and “dings” as expected from use and time. Both are still very sturdy with no “brittleness” that sometimes occurs in wood over time. Amount of wear is consistent with their age and use. One appears to have a dark seal applied.
