Item Details

A rare J.C. Brown ‘Acorn’ shelf clock in a Rosewood and Walnut case with curved side arms having acorn finials. The clock has an hour glass form with a reverse painted glass panel at the top illustrating lyres and gold detailing with the scene at the bottom panel displaying a stately white home with fluted columns and a cartouche reading ‘Residence J.C. Brown Bristol, Ct.’ The original label at the inside of the cabinet behind the brass pendulum dates the clock to 1850 and states ‘Eight Day Spring Clocks Mfg J.C. Brown Bristol Conn’. The dial of the clock has Roman numerals in black and reads ‘Forestville Mfg., Bristol, Ct., USA’. The works are original, the dial is new and the reverse painting is believed to be newer on the original glass.
