E. Howard Astronomical Regulator #44 Clock in Carved Walnut Case

An impressive E. Howard of Boston Massachusetts #44 Regulator hanging clock in a superbly carved Walnut case with a brass 8 day, weight driven time only movement, stamped ‘E. Howard Boston’. The clock is substantial in size, the massive crest has a carved face with scrolled acanthus detailing and prominent finials at the sides and bottom. The replaced white metal dial has black 5 minute numbers on the chapter dial indicating the minutes in Arabic numerals with the sub hour dial in Roman numerals under the sub seconds dial above again in Arabic numerals. The beveled glass panel at the front displays the four-jar mercury filled Sandwich glass pendulum, the brass weight at the right side and a large brass beat indicator that states ‘E. Howard Boston Mass’ at the bottom. A narrow silver metal label affixed to the front of the glass panel reads ‘The Dentist Supply Company, New York’. Interestingly, there is an old ‘Holtzer & Cabot, Boston’ (1889-1891) electrical box attached to the inside of the case at the upper left with old insulated wiring that extends across the back of the case and through the back upper right corner where it was cut off long ago. The purpose for the electrical box is a mystery. This clock is illustrated in an E. Howard & Co. catalogue that was published in 1874 by J.B. Batchelder & Co. Printers, Boston. The beat indicator is shown differently in the catalogue. A copy of the catalogue illustration is included.

Condition

The wall clock is excellent in appearance and is reported to be in working order however the clock was not tested or tracked for time accuracy.
