WWI "Doughboy" Military Clothing and Paper Ephemera from 1918

A collection of WWI military clothing and paper ephemera from 1918. This unique collection of clothing and memorabilia illustrates the typical kit of a U.S. ‘doughboy’ in the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. It includes a long, wool, double-breasted overcoat labeled ‘Desco Tailoring System, Edward E. Strauss & Co. Chicago.’ The coat has a flourish design on the sleeves and hook and clasp closure. Also included are a black, one-piece men’s ‘union suit’ with white trim and button closures for the arms, a linen or wool white, long-sleeved men’s undershirt with a pair of matching men’s ‘long johns’ with button closure in the front and lace closure in the back. Additional clothing items includes a pair of men’s summer military riding breeches with button front closure and lace-up sides at the knee and a wool, knitted, sleeveless undershirt. A standard-issue wool shirt and riding breeches with button-front closure and lace up-legs. A pair of leather gaiter leggings with brown leather buckle straps and a pair of knitted wool men’s socks. Included is a pamphlet titled, ‘Scenes of Camp Pike, National Army Cantonment, Little Rock, Arkansas,’ and a collection of papers. Condition

Some clothing has moth damage, stains and wear. The paper items are brittle and worn at the edges. The leather gaiters show some mold. The socks are severely moth-eaten.
