A robe or ‘riza’ in Russian is a specially made metal cover to protect a holy icon, yet pierced to expose the underlying painting. This riza is made with a sterling silver embossed robe and foliate repoussé border and a gold tone embossed halo. The Our Lady of Kazan is a holy icon within the Russian Orthodox Church, representing the Virgin Mary as the protector and patroness of the city of Kazan. The history of Our Lady of Kazan is based on a 1579 supernatural apparition by the Virgin Mary to a little Kazan girl, expressing the buried location of the original Kazan icon, which was later stolen, and now feared lost. This beautiful riza includes a gold tone metal stand embellished with a foliate design and has a brown velvet backing with a hook for hanging.
