1962 Civil Defense Drinking Water Barrel and Assorted Cans

A 1962 Civil Defense drinking water barrel and assorted cans. The black Civil Defense barrel has the iconic yellow and black Civil Defense logo at the top of the barrel and the words, ‘Department of Civil Defense, Department of Defense.’ It is a seventeen and a half gallon drinking water barrel and has instructions printed on the front, including instructions on how to use as a commode. It was manufactured by Rheem Manufacturing Company in Chicago, Illinois. It shows the ‘Contract No. DSA-4-773’ on the bottom front of the barrel. The selection includes four reproduction food tins: Kuner’s Fruits; Blue Hill Pumpkin; Lifesavers Butter Rum; an opened, empty can of RC cola, and a box for Ritz crackers. There are six salt and pepper tins depicting a farmer on a tractor with holes for the letters ‘S’ and ‘P’ drilled in the tops. There are twenty-eight cans of METALIFE 3XM, ‘Makes oil three times better’ from the Metalife Company in Wentzville, Missouri.

- to fair. The Civil Defense water storage barrel has some rusting and very slight paint loss.
