Original Oil Painting, "A Battle at Sea" by Eugene E. LePoittevin

An original oil on board by listed French artist, Eugene Edmond LePoittevin, (1806-1870), is titled A Battle at Sea. The artist signed and dated the piece, 1853, in the lower left quadrant. Beautifully framed in a gilded wood frame with heavy applied gesso ornamentation. A brass plaque with artist name and date is fastened to the bottom center of the frame. Wiebold Studio label is fixed to the verso. The artist is best known for his Romantic Realism style in which his paintings tell a story. He studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the artists, Louis Hersent and Xavier Lepris. He is also known as an illustrator, cartoonist, engraver and his work is featured in key periodicals of the time.
Condition
The painting has been re-lined and unpainted in a few areas. Some crazing on the surface.
