Three John Howell Titles New Spain and Mid 19c American West

A group of three titles published by John Howell Books of San Francisco. Each large format volume features beautiful color illustrations. The first is titled ‘Western America in 1846-1847: The Original Travel Diary of Lieutenant J.W. Abert who mapped New Mexico for the United States Army,’ and was edited by John Galvin. Published 1966, 116pp plus maps, edition limited to 3000 copies, bound in light colored linen with colored emblem to front board. Next is ‘A Record of Travels in Arizona and California 1775-1776,’ a new translation edited by John Galvin. Published 1965, 102pp plus map and appendices, printed gold cloth binding, limited to 1250 copies. Finally, ‘A Description of The Kingdom of New Spain by Senor Don Pedro Alonso O’crouley 1774,’ also edited by Galvin. Published 1972, 148pp, with folded map in back slip pocket. Bound in bright blue cloth with bright gilt lettering with printed paper dust jacket.
Condition
“Western America” has plastic dust jacket, with a few small spots of foxing on cloth near joints and along edges. “A Record of Travels” has a thin mylar dust jacket and well protected binding. Paper dust jacket on “The Kingdom of New Spain” has frayed edges and toned spine. It has red front and back endpapers that are slightly toned along edges, and have pencil marks on page in front (all have pencil marks to one front endpaper).
