"The True History of the Conquest of New Spain" 1908 Hakluyt Society

The five-volume set of Bernal Diaz Del Castillo’s ‘The True History of the Conquest of New Spain,’ edited and published in Mexico by Genaro Garcia, and translated into English with an introduction and notes by Alfred Percival Maudslay, M. A., published 1908, London, The Hakluyt Society. Volumes I, II, IV, and V are cloth-bound octavo sized books, with gilt lettering and decoration to spine and front board. Volume III is a small pamphlet printed in 1910, of only 36 pages, containing one small bound-in map labeled as the ‘Transcript from the Modern Plan of the City of Mexico showing the suggested location of the Maguey Plan.’ Loose maps are located in a back slip pocket in Vol. I (2 maps); Vol. II (1 map); Vol. IV (1 map); and Vol. V (no map present.) These maps have not been inspected.

Condition

Ex-library, with numerous stamps, markings, and card pockets attached to back endpaper facing pastedown. Spines faded and worn at edges, boards scuffed or dirty and corners bumped. Hinges cracked on most. Unknown if all maps are present. Vol. III is bound in paper, which is frayed and chipped at edges.
