Antique Oliver Typewriter
Item Details
An antique typewriter manufactured by the Oliver Typewriter Company, No. 9 Chicago. U.S.A. The Oliver typewriters are a favorite of the typewriter collectors. These machines were produced in the USA from 1896-1919, and most came from the Woodstock, Illinois factory. This machine shows its last patent in 1913. It remains in good condition, and types well. The decals show some wear, but all are noticeably visible. The Oliver machines were unique in that they had large U shaped keys sitting on two side towers, thus creating a down stroke rather than an upstroke. This enabled the typist to see his or her work while typing, a feature that was greatly welcomed. The down stroke also made for a cleaner, harder strike that worked well for carbon copies.
