An original lithograph of a 1755 engraving titled Jean Baptiste Massé produced by Jean-Georges Wille (1715 – 1808) after Louis Tocqué (1696 – 1772).The print is set in a glass plated wood frame with gold foliage appliqué. ‘lliW’ is hand written on the top center of the plate. The text on the bottom of the plate translates to ‘Painter and Advisor of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. The famous Le Brun, in the rich paneling, Versailles inclosed priceless masterpieces, who of Louis the Grand we have traced the story. Assisted by chisel, Massé, for thirty years, by the work of a kind to triumph over time, France and Painter extends all the glory.’ The portrait depicts the artist proofing drawings for the Grande Gallery of Versailles.
