Jacques Lipchitz Cast Bronze Sculpture of Samson and the Lion

A Cast bronze sculpture by Jacques Lichitz of Samson and the Lion. Lithuanian -born Chaim Jakob Lipchitz (1891-1973) is the Father of Cubist Sculpture and trained in Paris in the early-1910s until the Germans invaded France in WWII where he fled to the United States and settled in New York. His art and influentail style can be seen in museums worldwide. This sculpture in cast bronze is of Samson and the Lion in combat, styled in forceful planes with out detail. The figures are arranged on base in complementary masses. The Lion is rearing on its hind legs, tail arching over back in tangles. His forelegs are raised and extending outward, head thrown back. Samson stands on bent right knee gripping the neck of the Lion with both hands, left leg poised in a bent position against the chest of the lion. This piece was commissioned in limited numbers (210) for the Reform Jewish Appeal for use as presentation pieces. Executed by Jacques Lipchitz 1967-1968, and inscribed to the pedestal #142. This piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and other relative ephemera.

Condition

-wood base has some minor blemishes, an engraved plate is under the base, needs dusted as the crevices are soiled.
