Antique Japanese Hari Bako Sewing Box

Item Details

An antique hari bako, or Japanese sewing chest, circa first quarter of 20th century. Made of mixed woods with an upper red felt pin cushion, and a lower portion consisting of five drawers. The top corner drawer (smallest one) in this section has grooved interior sides and a sliding lid, so drawer can be removed and function as a separate compartment. The drawer fittings are copper, with the two top drawers in lower section having knobs made in the shape of eggplant. Where the lowest drawer is removed, there is a circular hole in the floor of piece about the size of a quarter.

Wood finish is a bit dull and dry, with a small split in wood on top lid on upper drawer. Wear is consistent with age and use.
