Original Portrait Painting Attributed to Val Prinsep 1887

Item Details

An exquisite, original oil painting depicting the portrait of a young English woman attributed to British portrait painter Valentine Cameron Prinsep (1838 – 1904). She wears red painted lips with flowers in her hair, which has been pulled back by blue satin ribbon. Her large brown eyes gaze at the viewer as she presents red grapes on the vine, the bowl of fruit resting in her right hand. She is adorned in an Victorian navy blue dress, and a small golden cross hangs from her neck. A large brimmed hat falls behind her, tied by a pink sash. She is resting against a moss covered stone, with snow capped mountains in the far distance. A name plate attached to the center of the frame reads ‘V.C. Prinsep R.A. 1887’. The painting is framed in an extremely ornate gilded Georgian style frame, crafted by Streamham Picture Frame and Gilding Works.

Valentine Cameron Prinsep (1838 – 1904) was a painter of the Pre-Raphaelite school, with works in the following collections: The Royal Academy of Arts Collection, London, Ashmolean Museum at The Univeristy of Oxford, London, Manchester City Art Gallery, UK, National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, National Portrait Gallery, London, Tate Gallery, London and The Huntington Library, California.

Condition

- minor damage to varnish of painting, particularly in her left hand. The frame is missing some small applique. Minor craquelure throughout.
