English Victorian Boot Match or Taper Holder

A vintage English brass Victorian boot match or ‘spill’ holder. The brass holder is in the stylized shape of a Victorian lady’s boot, with scalloped front accented by copper buttons and a scalloped easel stand to the back. The boot was designed to hold ‘spills’ or tapers used to light candles or lamps. Spills were strips of twisted paper or thin wooden sticks used to light stoves and fires in the 1800’s and were used to transfer fire from the fireplace to other sources.
