Edward Potthast "Breton Boy" Oil on Canvas Portrait
Item Details
A lovely oil on canvas portrait titled Breton Boy, by American Impressionist artist Edward Henry Potthast (American, 1857-1927). The portrait depicts a sweet child with blond cropped locks. His head is turned as he gazes over his right shoulder. The boy is dressed in Breton traditional garb with a lovely lace collar and blue blouse. The painting is signed to the lower right, and is finished in a gilded dimensional frame with scrollwork corner accents. The piece is an early work by Potthast, a revered Cincinnati artist who studied under Thomas Satterwhite Noble in the 1880s, later studying under Carl Marr at the Royal Academy in Munich. Potthast studied in Paris, and spent the majority of his career in New York. He is most famously known for his paintings of people at leisure at urban parks and sun-dappled Eastern beaches.
