"The Campfire" Original Oil Painting by Irma Koen, 20th Century

An original oil painting on stretched canvas titled ‘The Campfire’ by Irma Renee Koen (American 1893-1975). Pale gray jagged mountains dominate the composition with a peach and gold sky and figures in the foreground gathered at campfire. The paint is masterfully applied in an impasto style creating both texture and depth. The painting is presented in a hand finished museum quality gold wood frame with a carved fluted edge. The artist’s signature is found in the lower right corner.
Irma Renee Koen was born in Rock Island, Il in 1893, she trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1903-1908 then did post graduate work at the Lyme Summer Scool of Art and the Art Student’s League of New York. Her love of travel afforded her the opportunity to study at various art colonies both in the United States and in Europe and she exhibited at the Paris salon in 1923-24. Irma lived in the Chicago area until the 1940’s when she moved to Cuernavaca, Mexico, a popular spot for movie stars and artists at the time.
