Circa 1790-1810 Hepplewhite Sideboard with Marquetry

Item Details

A very fine circa 1790-1810 Hepplewhite sideboard of the Federal period. This beautiful American sideboard is in mahogany and mahogany veneers with pine and maple as secondary woods. It has a two board top, typical of the period, with a wide lead board, a small board terminus, overlapping to cover a chair rail or to prevent the wall from being damaged. The piece has ovolo corners, a swell front, with a single drawer centered above a two door cupboard. This is flanked by cupboards that are single doors with faux drawers to visually balance the piece. The piece stands on tapering Hepplewhite legs. This beautiful sideboard is finely inlaid with holly, box, and satinwood in a style that is of the period and consistent with it’s Boston origin. The sideboard has the original sandcast Federalist brass pulls. The piece has had minor repairs to veneers and the finish has been renewed many years ago to correct alligatoring of the varnish. Three original keys for locks are included. This sideboard was purchased from the venerated antiques firm of Israel Sack, Inc. by Federation Antiques of Hyde Park and was originally on loan to the governor’s mansion of Minnesota.
