1890s German Gothic Revival Shrunk

Item Details

An 1890s Gothic Revival German shrunk made of oak. This piece of heavily decorated furniture features a cornice top with dentil molding and two arched doors with raised quatrefoil accents. Above the doors, a carved banner reads, ‘Tages Arbeit! Abends Gäste! Saure Wochen! Frohe Feste!’, which translates to, ‘Daily work! Evening guests! Hard weeks! Joyous feasts!’ in English, a snippet of a classic poem by Goethe. Doors are flanked by carved pilasters and moulded shelving with chamfered corners and fretwork carved details. The lower shelves are raised on bracket feet, two of which are surmounted by a scroll. Dated ‘1890’ below the doors. Lower piece features a beveled edge with notched molding over two side by side drawers. Drawers feature carved floral accents, original metal hardware, and machine cut dovetailing. Below the drawers are two blind doors with linen fold paneling and ornate strap hinges. Doors open to reveal interior storage with fittings for one shelf. Sides are paneled as are the inside of the doors. This substantial piece is supported by bracket style feet.
