Antique Cast Iron Hearth Crane, Kettle and Andirons

Item Details

A group of antique cast iron hearth items including a hearth crane, a set of andirons and a kettle. The crane fits into eye bolts mounted into the side of the hearth. This crane will be sold without the pictured eye bolts, but the crane can be easily removed and used with other eye bolts. The andirons are of the ‘ring top’ or ‘key’ type, which could be used for holding a spit bar in addition to the original purpose of holding logs for the fire. The cast iron kettle is marked ‘patented June 23, 1863, Sullivan & Herdman, Zanesville, Ohio, #8’ and dates from the 1860s to the late 1800s. Patent number 38,972 was granted to B. H Menke for this kettle. The bottom of the kettle is made so it would sit into the opening on a wood stove, and it has a bail handle. This group is a good reminder of just how much work went into making something as simple as a pot of tea in the past.
