Original Louis Eilshemius
Item Details
An original Louis Eilshemius (1864 – 1941) oil on masonite painting. Eilshemius is easily one of the more interesting characters you’ll come across investigating failed careers of art history. Certainly comparable to Van Gogh, Eilshemius had his work accepted by the National Academy of Design in 1887 and 1888, but was thereafter rejected. He continued to work for thirty years, without any love from academy auspices. He found himself estranged by the self indulgent fantasies and naive thematics that wandered into his work. His awkwardly playful subjects, too happy bathers, ethereal naked beauties, all spastic with the joy of life, too spastic. Eventually Louis was laughed out of art and quit painting twenty years before his death. He wrote letters to the newspapers, about how everything was so unfair. This painting features a pair of bathers. It is presented in a wooden frame of gold gilt, and is one of the best conversational paintings you are likely to come across.
Condition
Good-Fair, the frame is dented at the bottom right hand corner.
