Rare Hannibal G. Hamlin Civil War Foot Officer's Sword

A very rare Civil War foot officer’s sword, one of only three known to exist, made by Hannibal Gilmore Hamlin, Junior, of Cincinnati, Ohio, a sutler in operation from 1862-1863, reportedly the third cousin of Abraham Lincoln’ cabinet member Hannibal G. Hamlin. The sword is spectacularly designed, with a solid cast brass hilt, guard and ricasso, with foliate designs, scrollwork and open work, the curved steel blade, with fuller running the length of the blade, stamped on the blade, wire wrap on the leather covered handle, the scabbard is black leather with brass throat collar,ring mount and drag. The piece is housed in a bespoke oak frame with red faux velvet backing and a brass plaque. Little in known of Hamlin, though it is believed he worked for other sword-makers such as Boner, Kittredge, Miles Greenwood and Tyler Davidson.

Condition

A few light nicks on the blade, general surface wear, a frayed spot to the wire wrap, the scabbard is flaking, heavier wear to the drag.
