Schrade Scrimshaw Knives

A Schrade cutlery knife set, model #1167, comes in a hinged box and includes a three knife set. Includes a single blade knife with 4’ blade, 5’ handle and pirate ship on handle (SC507 stamped on tang); a triple blade knife with a 4’ handle, a 4’ blade, a 3’ blade, two 2’ blades and an image of whale poachers on handle (SC505 on tang); and a single blade knife with 3’ blade with 2’ handle with image of whale on handle (SC513 stamped on tang). Scrimshaw is an early American Art form, originating from the whaling industry. A whaler etched or scratched drawings of current themes on any available material, including whale bones. With many idle hours at sea, scratching, the whaler then rubbing lamp black or tobacco to reveal the drawing. As America traveled West, this art form was carried by frontiersmen and applied to knives and other items.
