"The Circle of Life" 1974 Feather Art By Norman A. Pierce

Item Details

A 1974 Native American feather art piece titled ‘The Circle of Life’ by the late artist Norman A.Pierce, of Red Cloud, Nebraska. This piece has feathers trimmed and mounted on corrugate with plastic jewel center. Textured basket weave fabric serves as a mat for the wood frame. This piece has a typewritten piece of paper on the back of the frame that explains the symbolism behind the piece. The artist has hand signed and numbered this work. The artist explains that in ‘The Circle of Life There is no beginning , there is no ending, we are born, somewhere, sometime, we live, we grow, we work, we love, we die. When we are young, our circle of life is large, with parents and relatives around us when we grow older our circle of life gets much smaller but hopefully much better. Sometime, somewhere, our body dies and our spirit passes through death’s doorway to a better life. The black part of the feathers stands for death, that comes to all of us, a difficult doorway, through which each of us must pass. The green feathers stand for Mother Earth from whence we were formed and where our bodies go when we die. The golden feathers stands for the golden memories we will have if we do kind deeds toward out many brothers and sisters all our lives. The little white that you see in the feathers stands for the peace and purity that each human being must have in his or her heart in order to live in peace with their fellow human being. May your circle of life be large and good. We shall all meet at the sundown campgrounds.’
