Ornate Cast Iron Renaissance Heraldic Parma Shield
Item Details
An ornate cast iron Renaissance Heraldic parma shield, seemingly Roman, with an angry mask to center surrounded by heraldic symbols depicting armor, gauntlet, torso shield, flags, swords, griffons, cherubs, cartouche panels of Roman guards and soldiers, shields, cornucopia, floral vases, mystical creatures, scrolling acanthus leaves, dolphin fish, trumpets, scrolls, lion heads and numerous symbols. The parma shield was typically used in the calvary and the signifer, or standard bearer, carried more ornate versions of the parma shield. The back of the shield retains the hardware where originally the leather enarmes straps would have been nailed on; unfortunately, due to the age of the shield and most likely the deterioration of the leather, the leather enarmes straps are not present.
Condition
For age – rust patina, missing enarmes straps to verso.
