Original Paul Chidlaw Pencil on Paper

Item Details

An original black-and-white pencil drawing by well-listed and esteemed Cincinnati artist and teacher, Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989). Chidlaw taught at both Our Lady of Cincinnati College (now part of Xavier University) and the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1946 to 1963 where he was also a student from 1919 to 1923 before going on to study at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Fountainbleu, France. Chidlaw’s art is highly revered and is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University as well as many private collections. The Chidlaw Gallery at the Art Academy of Cincinnati is also named in his honor as he is still revered for being one of the first Abstract Expressionists to do work in Cincinnati as seen by his gorgeous vibrant brush strokes typical in his painting style. In his later years, however, Chidlaw suffered from macular degeneration yet still continued to produce art via black-and-white drawings that he could only view with his peripheral vision. While this work is not dated it is quite possible that he created it later in his life. The simple black lines alternating in thickness and length became something beautiful and, living under the skilled hand of Chidlaw with special attention to movement and composition, typical to his work. In this small and simple, yet evocative, drawing the artist has articulated what would appear to be a harbor scene. Presented in a sleek composite black frame with double matting to inner edge. Signature to lower left.
