Early 1900's Tin Tobacco Tag Collection

A fantastic collection of late 1800’s-early 1900’s tin tobacco tags, displayed in a black framed case. The tags have wonderful graphic appeal and the best names, with a group from Little Joe’s, Park Plug, Long Bill, Walker’s Pure Leaf, Jolly Tar, Big Kick, Every Day Smoke, Forked Deer, and First Step, among others. Tin tobacco tags were first developed in the 1870’s to identify slabs and twists of tobacco from the various tobacco houses of the South. At first wood plugs were used, both it was Ben Finzer of Louisville who first conceived of putting the tin tags on the outside of the tobacco slab. Over 12, 000 different tags have been catalogued. Tin tobacco tags became obsolete in the 1920’s.
